HAPPY CUSTOMERS

Another brilliant weekend stay at the Pickwick Inn. Outstanding location, beautiful rooms and first class food and drinks, all provided by the ever friendly Eddie, Jenny and staff. Perfect. Great location to explore the Trevose coastline and beaches plus easy access to the Camel Trail. Highly recommend a visit to Camel Valley Vineyard too. Don’t be tempted to travel to eat, the food at the Pickwick Inn is better than most local restaurants!

HAPPY CUSTOMERS

Met at the Pickwick inn with friends recently and first impression was very good. Lovely old beamed bar, nice atmosphere and good selection of ales. We ate in the restaurant and we all agreed that the food and service was excellent. It was also nice that we were able to have our coffee in the sitting area in the bar afterwards. We will be back again.

HAPPY CUSTOMERS

Called in for a meal early on Boxing night with a large family group 6 adults 3 under 8’s and 2 babies. The staff were so welcoming and attentive. The food amazing, a great menu choice and freshly cooked food. We ate in one of the nooks in the bar area where we could sit easily with the children. We were offered a table in the restaurant if required but decided we were happy where we were. Will definitely go back again and would highly recommend The Pickwick Inn. The service was first class and would highly commend the staff who served us the delicious food. Great choice for Children too.

The Dickens Connection

Pickwick Inn Padstow Historic Building

In October 1842, Charles Dickens visited Padstow and was greatly inspired; he penned his tale ‘The Christmas Carol’.

Dickens came to Cornwall to visit his good friend Dr Miles Marley, whose son, Dr Henry Frederick Marley, was a doctor in Padstow for 51 years.

Miles Marley provided Dickens with the surname for Scrooge’s deceased partner, Jacob. He said to his friend Miles “I will make you famous within a year!” which is when he penned his tale.

We are not exactly sure where Charles stayed but rumour has it that he stayed at ‘The Dower House’ in Padstow.

Dr Henry Frederick Marley died at his home in St Issey on 26th January 1908, aged 76 years and is buried in St Issey.

Dr Miles Marley is buried in St Endellion.

(This photograph is of Dr Miles Marley’s daughters crossing Little Petherick bridge pre 1904).

Intrigued after a visit to The Pickwick, local historian Barry West decided to follow up this story and uncovered clues which supported the rumours, also discovering the grave of Dr Miles Marley. This story was subsequently covered by the BBC, The Guardian, The Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror.

The Dickens’ connection lives on through The Pickwick Inn. Proprietors Eddie and Jenny Stanton have been welcoming guests for over 40 years, their daughters Natalie & Jessica are partners with the family now welcoming the fourth generation into the business!. The Team, with its constant pursuit for excellence, has ensured this Cornish country pub, in the middle of nowhere, continues to entice people from far and wide to turn ‘off the beaten track’, and return to The Pickwick time and time again.
